Iron Foods for Prevention & Treatment of Anemia/p>

Protein Foods

  • Beans, dry, cooked: garbanzo, black, kidney, pinto, lentils etc.
  • Eggs, especially yolks, not raw
  • Red meat, cooked, lean only
  • Fish*
  • Seafood: oysters, mussels, shrimp, all cooked
  • Poultry, dark meat especially
  • Tofu

Other Sources

  • Whole Grains: wheat, oats, brown rice etc.
  • Iron fortified cereals, breads, pasta and rice. (Read the label for the iron content)
  • Legumes: lima beans, soybeans, dried peas etc.
  • Seeds: almonds, pine nuts, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds etc.
  • Dried Fruits: prunes, raisins, apricots etc.
  • Vegetables: broccoli, spinach, kale, collards, asparagus, dandelion greens
  • Molasses

*Avoid Due to High Mercury Levels

  • It is best to choose shellfish, canned fish, smaller ocean fish and farm-raised fish e.g. trout
